Annual Report 2023

South Australia’s Road Safety Action Plan 2023–2025: Annual Report 2023 presents a 12-month snapshot of achievements and progress against the action plan’s priority areas. This includes:

  • schools and local places
  • road users and road user behaviour
  • regional areas.

The annual report also reports against the safety performance indicators in the action plan, where data is available.

Sadly, 117 lives were lost on South Australian roads, while 824 people were seriously injured. However, throughout 2023, progress was made in delivering the action plan to increase safety for road users in South Australia.

The South Australian Government, together with stakeholders, has delivered several initiatives in the action plan. A selection is outlined below.

Operation Safe Roads led by SA Police is a state-wide corporate operation that focuses on:

  • repeat traffic offenders
  • vulnerable road users
  • Fatal Five offences (drink and drug driving, dangerous driving, speeding, mobile phone use and seatbelts).

Introduction of new speed limits on beaches following consultation with the community, local government and stakeholders.

Continued investment in:

  • infrastructure to support enforcement, such as road safety and mobile phone detection cameras.

About 30,000 people accessed a road safety-related educational program in the past 12 months. This includes more than:

  • 28,000 students
  • 1,000 regional football players
  • 500 people from local community groups and organisations.
