Mobile Phone Detection Camera Trial

Following a State Government tender process, two potential mobile phone detection camera providers were shortlisted to supply cameras and related technology to South Australia for the purposes of a trial.

What was the purpose of the mobile phone detection camera trial?

The mobile phone detection camera trial allowed South Australia Police (SAPOL) and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to assess the solutions presented by two providers and evaluate how the cameras performed when mounted on a Variable Message Sign (VMS) in the South Australian road environment.

The trial included daily monitoring of camera data by the project team and the quality and deliverables of both providers were monitored against key performance indicators.

What was the period of the trial?

The trial started on 20 March 2023 and ran until late April 2023.

Where was the trial being conducted?

The trial took place on the west side of South Road, Torrensville with the camera equipment mounted on the VMS near the corner of Ashley Street. View the location on Google Street View.

Were drivers fined or did they lose demerit points for using their mobile phones while driving during the trial?

No. During the trial, motorists photographed by the trial cameras were neither fined nor received demerit points for illegally using their mobile phones while driving. Motorists were reminded of the risks associated with illegally using a mobile phone while driving and to always ensure compliance with the road rules.

How was driver privacy protected during the trial?

All data and images generated through the trial were properly managed and protected in accordance with SAPOL operating procedures.

How much did the trial cost?

There was no cost to run the trial. The trial was part of the tender submission process and was paid for by the prospective providers.

What are the next steps following the trial?

A review of outcomes of the trial and a recommendation for a preferred provider took place towards the end of 2023. Following a competitive tender process, Acusensus was awarded the contract as the preferred provider for the supply and installation of mobile phone detection cameras.
