Slow down for a breakdown

Sunday, 27 April 2025

Two men stand by a broken-down car on the side of a road. A breakdown service vehicle with flashing amber lights is parked behind it. Warning triangles are on the road.

From Monday, 19 May 2025, drivers must slow down to 25 km/h when passing a stationary breakdown service vehicle with flashing amber lights.

This new road rule aims to improve safety for workers and passengers waiting at the roadside.

It is an extension of the existing 25 km/h speed limit when passing emergency services vehicles and school buses.

When you must slow down

The 25 km/h speed zone applies on an area of road:

  • near a stationary breakdown service vehicle with flashing amber lights
  • alongside road bollards or cones placed by a breakdown service worker.

The speed limit does not apply if the stationary breakdown service vehicle is on the opposite side of the road from you.

About breakdown service vehicles

Breakdown service vehicles include:

  • tow trucks
  • vans and other vehicles with flashing amber lights providing roadside assistance.

Vehicles with amber lights that are not breakdown service vehicles use the road network too. These vehicles include farming equipment, vegetation control and construction.

What you need to do

If you see a vehicle on the roadside with flashing amber lights, you should:

  • reduce your speed
  • prepare to brake.

If it is a breakdown service vehicle, you will need to reduce your speed to 25 km/h when passing.
