Are you fit to drive?

Thursday 11 December 2025

Driving is a big responsibility. Your safety, and the safety of others, depends on how fit you are to drive.

Your obligations

All drivers must make sure they are healthy enough to drive safely. This means you must notify Service SA if you:

  • have a medical or eyesight condition
  • take medication that could affect your driving.

Doctors also have a legal duty. If they think a patient has a physical or mental condition that could make driving unsafe, they must report it.

Older drivers

Older drivers are usually careful and take fewer risks. But as people age, their reaction time may slow down and they might face health problems. Changes to vision or hearing can also occur. Medications may affect a driver's safety on the road.

If you are worried about someone else's driving, you can:

  • encourage them to speak to their doctor
  • offer to go with them to the appointment
  • contact Service SA to report your concerns.

The driver may then be asked to do a medical check and possibly a driving test.
