It's time to choose road safety on our rural roads

Friday, 6 September 2024

September marks Rural Road Safety Month. It is a time to raise awareness of the unique challenges and risks of driving on rural and remote roads.

Rural Road Safety Month is now in its seventh year. It is a national community-based initiative from the Australian Road Safety Foundation.

Despite being less populated, almost two-thirds of total lives lost in Australia in 2023 were on rural and remote roads.

The South Australian Government is committed to reducing road trauma in South Australia. The government is doing this through the Road Safety Action Plan 2023–2025.

The action plan sets out the South Australian Government’s agenda for reducing lives lost and serious injuries on our roads.

You can stay safe by:

  • driving to the conditions
  • staying within signposted speed limits
  • taking regular breaks
  • driving with caution where native animals may be present
  • sharing the drive on long road journeys.
